Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, Gujarat: History, Darshan Timings & How to Reach
I recently visited Dwarka to take the darshan of dwarkadish temple but Dwarka is also famous for another temple that is known as Nageshwar jyotirlinga temple its value is the same as somonth temple and counts in 12 jyotirlinga temples. So In this blog I shared about my tour experience.
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple History
I visited first time temple without any knowledge of history and I explored the temple and know about some details from locals that things I shared it here and describe about this and as per this temple is mentioned in the Shiva Purana and as per it, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is believed to be located in the ancient forest known as Darukavana. The legend tells of a demon named Daruka and his wife Daruki, who troubled saints and innocent people living in the region. Among those imprisoned by the demon was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva named Supriya.
Even while held captive, Supriya continued chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" and encouraged the other prisoners to pray to Lord Shiva. Their unwavering devotion pleased Lord Shiva, who appeared in a radiant form, defeated the demon Daruka, and manifested Himself as a Jyotirlinga to protect His devotees forever. This divine manifestation is believed to be the origin of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.
While exploring the temple, I also learned that the name "Nageshwar" means "Lord of the Serpents." The word Naga means serpent, and Ishwara means Lord. Since serpents are closely associated with Lord Shiva, the name reflects one of His most revered forms.
Although the temple's mythology is described in the Shiva Purana, the exact historical date of its original construction is not clearly documented. The present-day temple has been renovated over time, but its spiritual importance has remained unchanged for centuries. Today, thousands of devotees visit Nageshwar Jyotirlinga every year, especially during Maha Shivaratri and the holy month of Shravan, seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva.
From my visit, I found that knowing the story behind the temple made the experience even more meaningful. Whether you visit for religious reasons or simply to explore one of Gujarat's most famous pilgrimage sites, understanding the legend mentioned in the Shiva Purana adds a deeper connection to this sacred Jyotirlinga.
Why is Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple Famous ?
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple famous for its shiva statue and its 25 meters tall , and it's the main attraction between tourists. This temple becomes the best destination during Maha Shivaratri and Shravan celebrations.
In the beautiful temple you can experience the Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam and its south-facing Shivling, along with the east-facing idol of Goddess Parvati that increase the spiritual significance of this temple and good atmosphere for prayer and meditation for devotees.
This temple is situated near to Dwarkadhish Temple and other spiritual destinations Bet Dwarka, and Rukmini Devi Temple that make popularity between devotees.

During my tour I visited the temple after 9 am but actual temple timings is between 6 am to 9 pm for all days of week.

How to reach Nageshwar Temple ?
Nageshwar jyotirling temple can be easily from Dwarka railway station or bus stand so follow below tips that help you.
- First reach Dwarka by train or bus then you can reach the temple through gsrtc local bus during early morning and it takes nearly 1 hour time to reach because road is single lane and Dwarka to nageshwar jyotirlinga distance is nearly 17 km.
- Sharing auto , Private bus service and you can book auto nearly 600-1000 rs and reach the temple from Dwarka.
