Mahakali Temple Chandrapur- Tour & Experience

Mahakali Temple Chandrapur

Chandrapur in Maharashtra is famous for coal mines, forests, and living traditions. At its heart stands the Mahakali Temple, a landmark of faith where locals and visitors come to seek strength, peace, and protection. Mahakali Temple is the famous destination at Chandrapur Maharashtra and I visited this temple two times in my life , and its very nice temple.

This guide blends tour details with an experience-style narration so you can plan your visit and also feel what it’s like to be there.

History of Mahakali Temple Chandrapur

The Chandrapur Mahakali Temple’s history is a blend of legend and recorded history. Its origins are tied to the 13th-century Gond King Khandkya Ballal, who discovered the idol here and, as the story goes, was miraculously cured of tumors after bathing at the site. He built a small shrine in gratitude.
Later, in the 16th century, Gond King Dhundya Ram Sah constructed the ancient temple that stood out for its distinct blend of Hindu and Tibetan architecture. Over time, the temple received renovations and community support, but the core faith and the original story of healing remain central to its identity.

Chandrapur Mahakali Temple Utsav

The ancient Mahakali Temple in Chandrapur becomes the center of grand celebrations every year during the Mahakali Utsav, held in the month of April. This annual festival is one of the biggest cultural and religious events in the region, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists.

The Unique Second Idol of Mahakali

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Chandrapur Mahakali Temple is that it houses two idols of the Goddess. The main idol, which most devotees worship, is in a standing posture inside the sanctum. But what makes this temple truly special is the presence of a second idol of Mahakali, placed in a horizontal lying position underground.

This lying idol is not immediately visible when you enter the temple. To reach it, devotees have to pass through a narrow underground tunnel, which adds a sense of mystery and spiritual depth to the temple experience. For many visitors, this second idol holds an equally strong spiritual significance, as it represents the goddess in her resting yet protective form.

While the temple is widely known for its main standing deity, the lying idol continues to attract curious pilgrims and devotees who wish to witness both forms of Mahakali. For locals, the presence of two idols under one temple roof is a mark of the goddess’s immense power and divine presence in Chandrapur.

Tour & Experience At Mahakali Mandir Chandrapur

This temple is very nice and I did my rituals with my family. I visited in the afternoon and the crowd was low ,and this time you can take the darshan easily. Some people visit an underground where lying idol of Mahakali god that looks scary but it's a new experience for me. I recommend you to visit one time in your life.
